Adequate carbohydrates
The full-strength formula suitable for most patients is simply a mixture of l.5 cups of powdered milk, I qt of homogenized milk, and 1 ml of Tween 40 (an emulsifying agent allowing better fat absorption). This mixture contains about 1 kcal/rnl, and, when given in the final volume recommended provides about 2500 kcal, 140 Gm of protein, and adequate carbohydrates. The fat content represents less than 4 percent of the total. Polyvisol and Fer-in-sol, 0.6 ml each, are added once daily to the formula. Many of the more complex jejunostomy feedings are difficult to prepare, likely to spoil before use, too high in fat content, and excessively hyperosrnolar, leading to a greater incidence of patient intolerance.
